What is Health?

This article gives an insight into how homeopaths view health compared to how conventional medicine tends to regard it.

Health isn’t just about the absence of illness

As homeopaths, we see health as a positive state of wellbeing. True health has to be thought of positively and dynamically, not simply as the absence of disease.

Health doesn’t just mean the absence of something. It isn’t a question of “well, you’re not ill, so, therefore, you must be healthy”.

Arguably, the above phrase currently sums up orthodox ideas. This is part of the reason why, when you see your doctor, you’re rarely given any advice on lifestyle, diet or any other beneficial changes to be healthier. The view is that you’re not sick, so you don’t need anything.

Proper health is not just about being disease-free but also possessing a positive dynamic state of wellbeing, making it hard for illness to get a foothold.

The Homeopathic Definition

Keeping people healthy and educating them about their health is an essential part of homeopathic practice. So a homeopath’s view of health is quite different from the orthodox perspective.

Just six words cover the homeopathic definition of health, “the freedom to adapt to change”. In other words, a healthy person can adapt freely according to changing circumstances.

Adapting is essential

It might sound strange that health is all about adapting, and it’s hard to convey how accurate this is.

On an elementary level, our body adapts all the time. If we’re hot, our body sweats and puts mechanisms in place to cool us. To adjust to the temperature, if we’re cold, we start to shiver, causing the tiny hairs on our body to rise, working to conserve and generate heat.

On an internal level, this process of adapting is constantly happening. For example, when we meet an infection, our immune system makes antibodies.

Homeopathy defines health as freedom on a physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual level. Health means our body can adapt to many adverse circumstances. The entire body operates in an integrated and harmonious way for optimum efficiency, allowing us to respond appropriately to the environment and anything that comes into our lives.

The World Health Organization have recently said that it is the ability to adapt and self-manage in the face of social, physical and emotional challenges. So, it seems that orthodox medicine is perhaps starting to catch up, although it may be a long time before it filters down to our GPs.

Being healthy is not passive. You must support your mind and body.

Health is about our bodies adapting and keeping the status quo. But we also need to be aware and help our bodies.

For example, if we eat lots of doughnuts and other sugary foods, we’re going to compromise our blood sugar balance and our bodies adapting mechanisms.

Or if we don’t manage stress effectively, it can negatively affect our mental and physical wellbeing. We have to assist our bodies in the adapting processes and not hinder them.

So that’s the homeopathic view, if we adapt to circumstances and maintain homeostasis in our bodies, we will stay healthy.
