Sprains and strains are common injuries that can occur during everyday activities. Although they often happen suddenly, it can take weeks or even months to recover.

A sprain occurs when a ligament is stretched or torn. A strain occurs when a muscle or tendon is stretched or torn. Both injuries can be excruciating, but fortunately, both can be treated at home with rest, ice, and elevation.
If you’re dealing with a sprain or strain, homeopathy can be a great way to speed up your recovery.
Homeopathic remedies are derived from natural substances and are safe for all ages. They work by stimulating the body’s healing response, helping to reduce inflammation and pain and getting you back on your feet.
If you’re unsure which remedy to use, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered here at CHE.
Most people will have heard of Arnica these days, it is a go-to for any kind of bump, bruise, cut or graze. This is a wonderful remedy to give immediately after the injury has occurred. In the case of sprains and strains, it is especially indicated if the injury happened after prolonged exertion. There will likely be inflammation, swelling, soreness and bruising of the soft tissues around the damaged joint, and the injured person will be telling you that they are fine and not to worry because they are scared for it to be touched or examined. They will feel better after a good rest.
This remedy is similar to Arnica but is for sprains and strains of the deeper tissues. It comes with all the usual soreness and bruising, but the affected area can feel cold and stiff. Where Arnica is for injuries after prolonged exertion, Bellis Perennis is very useful for injuries occurring from constant overwork, such as carpal tunnel and repetitive strain injuries. Again they do not want to be touched or examined, but warm heat will make the site of the injury feel better.
When a muscle has been strained or pulled, or there is an injury to the joint and Arnica isn’t helping, then Bryonia is your next stop. The pain accompanying the injury is sharp and tearing and is worse for any movement. The injury does feel better for pressure, so a bandage or laying on the painful side will help, as will cold applications. With the pain comes irritability. They just want to be left alone and not bothered.
You know these types of injuries. You dread moving them because it is sore and stiff, and you can’t get comfortable in any position. However, once you have started to move a little bit, it begins to feel better and you can function more easily – a bit like a rusty gate. This remedy is more for the joints than the soft tissues, where the main symptom is pain with restlessness. Warm applications and a nice hot bath will also help ease the pain and stiffness.
This is your go-to remedy for injuries to the tendons, joints and bones and severe sprains where tendons have been wrenched or torn, bones are bruised, or ligaments split. The pain is sharp and shooting. Pains feel better for hot/warm applications, very gentle motion and rubbing.
This remedy is helpful for chronic weakness and constant sprains, mainly of the ankle. Feet can be ice cold, and the ankle can spasm and have frequent leg and foot cramps. This remedy goes deeper than Arnica and Ruta, so it is good for old injuries or if you have tried other remedies, but they haven’t really helped.
Keep things simple, look for a couple of characteristic symptoms to choose your remedy and then take a dose every 15 minutes for three or four doses and see how you go. Use the potencies 6c or 30c as they work best for these very physical injuries. But if you haven’t got these, use what you have to hand.
Prevention is always better than cure, so stay safe out there! Make sure your shoelaces are tied, take breaks when doing strenuous tasks, and if you’re naturally clumsy and can easily trip over the pattern on a carpet – avoid patterned carpets.
