Homeopathic Remedies for Teething

Teething can be a difficult time for both babies and parents. Most babies start teething around six months old, though this is just a guide. Some may start earlier or later, depending on when their body is ready.

Teething occurs when the teeth break through the gums, which can be a painful process for some babies.

Symptoms of teething can include:

  • Drooling
  • Chewing on anything and everything
  • Irritability
  • Facial rash/red cheeks
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Sore/red gums

If your baby is experiencing discomfort, there are several ways you can help relieve their pain, such as massaging their gums or giving them a cold teething ring or cold fruit and veggie sticks to chew on (cucumber works well for this). Additionally, it’s important to make sure your baby is getting plenty of fluids and staying hydrated.

Though teething can be trying, it’s a normal part of development – eventually, everyone will get through it!

Homeopathic remedies are especially effective with children, and there are some excellent remedies to support you and your baby through this process.

Our Top Remedies for Teething

Belladonna – Sudden, red and burning pains

When it comes to teething, the keys to this remedy are the words sudden, red and burning. This applies to the gums with intense pain and red, burning hot cheeks. The burning theme follows through as often the child will have a high fever with a glassy look in their eyes and dilated pupils. They won’t want to drink and will be highly sensitive to all stimuli, especially touch. They want to chew on something which makes them feel better.

Chamomilla – One red cheek and one pale

The easiest way to spot this remedy is that the child will have one red cheek (on the side that the tooth is coming through), and the other cheek will look very pale. They want to be carried with fast movements and are thirsty for cold drinks. The pain is so bad that it makes them angry. They have no idea what they want, and you can’t please them no matter what you do. Grass-green diarrhoea-like stools often accompany the teething symptoms.

Calc Carb – Slow, difficult and delayed teething

This is a good remedy if the child is slow or delayed in their teething. They are very reserved in new situations and will play contentedly on their own. There are lots of chewing motions with their gums. They have a big appetite and sweat easily at night. Chamomilla will also help with the teething symptoms, but Calc Carb will enable moving things along.

Calc Phos – Great for tooth and bone development

Another good remedy for slow and difficult teething but instead of the sturdy Calc Carb, they can look thin and malnourished as they have poor assimilation and intolerance to milk. The teeth have issues cutting through the gums. It is an excellent remedy for teeth that decay early.

Mag Phos – Shouting, screaming and sobbing

Teething is never fun, but this remedy is hypersensitive to the pain, so there is lots of screaming, shouting, and restlessness with sobbing. It isn’t a fun place to be. They feel better for heat and hard pressure. It can look very similar to Chamomilla, so if that doesn’t work, give Mag Phos a try.

Pulsatilla – The clingy child that wants to be outside

They will be very tearful and weepy and want to be held constantly (like Chamomilla but no fast movements this time). Their symptoms improve when they are outside and given large amounts of consolation and fuss. They usually have a runny nose when teething with copious amounts of a bland yellowy/green snot.

ABC – A great teething combination

Sometimes it’s hard to choose between remedies, especially when you have a screaming baby on your hands, and ABC is a great way to go until you can narrow it down. It’s a combination remedy of Aconite, Belladonna and Chamomilla.

So there you have it, there are many different remedies that can help with teething, so it’s worth researching to find the one that will work best for your baby. In the meantime, keep them hydrated and comforted as much as possible – they’ll get through it eventually, and so will you!
